Filtered Color

Came across these stunning designs by Joel Malone while browsing  Design*Sponge this morning. Believe it or not, these are coasters made from photo filters. The colored lenses would surely add a perfect pop of color to a muted palette. For those who already have enough color in their design, the clear lenses still have the beautiful shape that brings together form and function. Happy Tuesday!

Inspiration

Tonight someone asked me to list any 5 things that inspired my design. Without being able to think for too long, I said the following:
1. The color of moss green and all subdued hues.
2. The typeface of Archer. It’s known for being used in Martha Stewart Living and recently I’ve seen it used by Wells Fargo.
3. The color fields of Mark Rothko. His concentration of color while abandoning line and form challenge me to look at each aspect of design as an individual instead of simply looking at the overall picture.
4. My surroundings
Growing up in a temperate climate with vineyards around me. I enjoy using natural hues as well as systematic forms that are reminiscent of the order found in a vineyard.
5. Architecture
Growing up I wanted so badly to be an architect. My love for the structure and function found in architecture is found in my design.

El Rio

I took an image I took with my iPhone at a private beach on the Russian River in northern Sonoma Valley. The typefaces I used are Gotham Rounded and Olsen LF. The word “river” in Russian is “река” What a pun.

Blaring Color

Although I usually gravitate towards subtle hues myself, I am a huge fan of the brightest of color blogs,  Lucky So and So. Make sure you check out her outfit page, where she turns everyday wardrobes into a loud visual experience!

I love Martha.

It’s true. I imagine my future with chickens and a garden just like hers. I would die for her gorgeously grey kitchen, and she seems to always do everything perfectly. Especially cake frostings.
Whenever I’m feeling colorless, I like to browse her site and especially her blog. They have great examples of simple analogous tones but also pops of unexpected palettes.
